Armed robbery suspect held after encounter at Charbagh stn
Lucknow, June 14 -- In a late-night operation at the Charbagh railway station here, Government Railway Police (GRP) apprehended a notorious armed robbery suspect after a brief shootout.
Inspector in charge Dharamveer Singh, leading a joint surveillance team, arrested the accused, who was identified as 35 year old Firoz from Imliabagh in Hardoi, following an exchange of fire. The suspect was wounded in the encounter.
According to Singh, the GRP team was conducting routine checks during which Firoz aroused suspicion.
"Upon being stopped, he opened fire on our officers with an iron bore pistol. In self defence, the police team returned fire, wounding him. He was immediately taken into custody and rushed for medical treatment," said DSP-Railways (Lucknow) Amit Kumar Singh.
"A subsequent search found an 315 bore iron pistol, two live cartridges, a spent shell, three mobile phones (two of which were later confirmed stolen), and Rs.820 in cash in his possession," read a police press note adding that Firoz has a long history of snatching and stealing passengers' belongings on moving trains and at railway stations, and of dealing in stolen goods. Firoz's criminal record includes multiple FIRs for theft and unlawful assembly at Bareilly GRP and Charbagh GRP, among other places.
