Anjali Singh's show guides Uttar Pradesh start season with victory
LUCKNOW, Oct. 9 -- An all-round performance by Agra's Anjali Singh helped former runners-up Uttar Pradesh off to a fine start in the Senior Women's T20 Trophy Elite, defeating Kerala by 19 runs, at the IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali on Wednesday.
The match, which also marked the beginning of domestic season for Uttar Pradesh cricket, was dominated by Uttar Pradesh spinners, especially Sonam Yadav, Anjali Singh and Archana Devi as Kerala, while chasing 108, could score 88 in 18.2 overs. While batting first after winning the toss, Sonali Singh-led Uttar Pradesh posted 107/5 in 20 overs, anchored by Anjali Singh's unbeaten 31 off 18 balls with the help of five boundaries that lifted their scoring rate late in the innings.
Captain Sonali (22, 34b, 1x4) provided steadiness in the middle, while Nishu Choudhary (19, 21b, 1x4) added valuable runs. Kerala's Salonee Dangore (3/18) was the pick of the bowlers, supported by Darsana Mohanan and Asha S, who took one wicket each.
In fact, it was a bad start for Uttar Pradesh as opener Muskan Malik (5) was cleaned up by Darsana Mohanan in the fourth over and soon the fellow opener Sampada Dixit (15, 23b, 1x40 too departed after being stumped by Vaisdhana Mp off Asha S.
Sonali along with debutant keeper-batter Nishi Kashyap (11, 13b, 1x4) added 18 runs, but the biggest one of 40-run partnership happened between Anjali and Garima Yadav.
While defending a challenging target, Uttar Pradesh bowlers kept striking regularly and let Kerala struggle before being bowled out for 88 in 18.2 overs. Opener Drishya IV fought hard with 35 off 35 balls, which contained five hits to the fence, but lacked support. Sonam Yadav led Uttar Pradesh's attack with 3/13, while Anjali Singh (2/15) and Archana Devi (2/15) maintained pressure through the middle overs. Skipper Sanjana S (12) and Asha S (10) were the other batters, who could touch the double-figure mark.
Now on Thursday, Uttar Pradesh take on J&K in their second league match, at the PCA New Cricket Stadium, Ground B at New Chandigarh.
After failing to qualify for the knockout last season, former champions Uttar Pradesh are set to begin their campaign in the Under-19 Vinood Mankad Trophy Youth List A, locking horns with Maharashtra in their opening game, at the Usha Martin Ground in Ranchi on Thursday.
