Meerut, Feb. 16 -- Five people, including a police constable, were seriously injured after a group of youths from another community allegedly pelted stones and hurled utensils at Kanwariyas during a community feast near a Shiva temple in Amroha, police said. All those injured were admitted to the district hospital and later discharged. The incident took place on Saturday evening at Mohalla Chebda Bypass, about 2 km from the district headquarters, and prompted deployment of additional police forces amid tension in the locality. According to officials and locals, Kanwariyas who had returned from Haridwar had organised a bhandara near the temple. After the meal, devotees were dancing to devotional songs dedicated to Lord Shiva played on a sound system. About 50 metres away, some youths from another community were celebrating a birthday party. Around 25-30 youths suddenly approached the feast at around 10 pm, shouted abuses and used objectionable language, including remarks directed at religious sentiments. When people objected, the group allegedly attacked them, throwing large stones and even utensils from the feast area. The devotees alerted emergency services, after which a bike-patrol police team reached the spot. Police said the assailants also targeted officers, and constable Shoaib Raza Khan was injured after being hit on the head by a stone. Station house officer Pankaj Tomar arrived with additional personnel. On seeing the police, the attackers fled. The police registered a case on the complaint of Abhishek Saini, son of an injured woman, against four named individuals and 22-25 unidentified persons. The named accused include Imran, Muqeem, Yunis Ali (son of Aasik Ali) of Darbare Kala, and Mohammad Zahid (son of Munna) of Basavanganj.
