LUCKNOW, Oct. 18 -- Four people, including a couple, were killed and two others injured when a speeding ambulance overturned after a tyre-burst on the Delhi-Lucknow highway within Sitapur's Ataria police station limits on Monday morning, senior police officials said. The ambulance, travelling from Dehradun to Varanasi via Sitapur, was carrying a patient who also died in the mishap, along with two other occupants. Circle officer (CO) of Siddhauli Alok Prasad said the ambulance overturned after running over a couple identified as Shyam Gupta and his wife Mamta Gupta, residents of Hardoi, and their 12-year-old daughter. The family had been waiting for a bus on the roadside near Hind Medical College around 8.15 am. They had come to visit a relative undergoing treatment at the medical college when the tragedy struck. The CO said Shyam Gupta, the ambulance driver Gurmeet Singh, and the patient Vishal Pandey died on the spot, while Mamta Gupta succumbed to injuries during treatment. The couple's daughter and Divyanshu Pandey, Vishal's brother who was accompanying him in the ambulance, sustained serious injuries and are being treated at different hospitals. Gurmeet Singh (23) was a resident of Haridwar. The patient Vishal Pandey hailed from Dehradun, while his brother Divyanshu Pandey is a resident of Bihar. Divyanshu is undergoing treatment at Hind Medical College, and the couple's daughter has been referred to Lucknow for advanced care. Police have sent the bodies for post-mortem examination.
