PRAYAGRAJ, Aug. 21 -- The Allahabad high court has refused to order a special investigation team (SIT) probe into the alleged unnatural deaths of cows and calves at Gaushalas in Vrindavan, Mathura. The court was informed by the state government counsel that measures have been taken to prevent such incidents in the future. A bench of Chief Justice Arun Bhansali and Justice Kshitij Shailendra, while disposing of the PIL on August 13, directed the state authorities to ensure proper care of cows and regular monitoring of Gaushalas. "Given the above facts, situation and the documents placed on record, we do not find any reason to continue with the present PIL; hence, the same stands disposed of," the order stated. The PIL was filed by Prahalad Krishna Shukla, who sought an SIT inquiry into the death of more than 50 cows and calves allegedly found dead on December 13, 2024, near the Dhaurera area/jungle, PMB Polytechnic, Mathura-Vrindavan Road. The petitioner claimed that cow identification tags and photographs showed the animals bore injuries. He alleged that despite his plea for a high-level probe, no action was initiated, leading him to approach the court. During earlier hearings, the court had asked for a response from the state authorities. The government informed that an investigation team was formed the same day, comprising the city magistrate, additional commissioner (municipal corporation), police officials and veterinary officers. The committee submitted an interim report on December 16, 2024, and an FIR was lodged.
