LUCKNOW, May 10 -- After the suspension of the Indian Premier League for a week, the ITF J30 tennis tournament found itself in murky waters with all players from abroad opting out of the event in the wake of the escalating tension between India and Pakistan. The event is set to begin at the Vijayant Khand Stadium here on Monday. Even before the last-minute withdrawal by foreign players on the eve of the two-day qualifying rounds on Friday, top 50-Indians had already chosen not to play. Players from several countries such as USA, Britain, China, Korea, Japan and Taiwan had sent their entries for the competition. Due to the India-Pakistan tension, the foreign players withdrew their names on the last day of the sign-in. Now, top ranked players of India will have a chance to collect vital ITF points. The organizing secretary Samit Kesari on Friday confirmed the development stating that many ranked players from India had but confirmed their participation. "All the foreign players have withdrawn before the sign-in. It's an opportunity for Indians to make use of the opportunity," he said. "We have made all arrangements and are fully alert to ensure the safety of our players. The qualifying round matches will start Saturday, whereas the main draw matches will be played from May 12," he added. The 13th National Pencak Silat Championship-2025, got off to a flying start here on Friday with the participation of 800 players from 38 teams across the country. This championship is being organized by the Pencak Silat Sports Association of UP under the aegis of the Indian Pencak Silat Federation. On the opening day, preliminary round matches were held in various categories. Kendriya Vidyalaya RRC, Fatehgarh emerged victorious in both athletics and boxing competitions of the 54th Sports Meet for Under 14, Under 17, and Under 19 boys. A total of 39 teams, 252 students and 43 escorts from Lucknow Division participated in the meet. Kendriya Vidyalaya Aliganj finished runner-up in athletics while Kendriya Vidyalaya Unnao got the third position. Kendriya Vidyalaya Chakeri were the runner-up in boxing.
