AGRA, Feb. 9 -- Aligarh police arrested 12 accused from different states in an alleged cyber fraud case after a retired deputy general manager of Punjab National Bank (PNB) lost more than Rs 1.10 crore. The complainant had invested the amount expecting high returns in the share market. SP (Rural) and nodal officer for cyber crime in Aligarh, Amrit Jain, addressed the media on Saturday. He stated that retired DGM Dinesh Kumar Sharma had filed a complaint regarding the cyber fraud. A case was registered at the Cyber Crime Police Station, Agra, under sections 318(4)/319(2) of BNS and 66D of the Information Technology Act. The investigation traced links to Hong Kong, where the gang allegedly operated through mutual bank accounts and exploited cyber slavery networks for money transfers. Police have managed to refund Rs 5.64 lakh to the victim's account as of now. "Few months back, the accused allegedly added the victim to WhatsApp groups, promising 200% profit in return and duped him of Rs 1,10,70,000," the SP said. Five teams were formed under DSP (Cyber Crime) Sarjana Singh. Police froze the traced bank accounts and contacted at least 500 account holders to prevent further fraud. The WhatsApp groups used in the alleged scam were shut down. The arrested individuals are from Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. 13 complaints have been registered against the accused on the National Cyber Reporting Platform (NCRP) portal from Maharashtra, West Bengal, Delhi, UP and Kerala, police said. The victim, DK Sharma, was present at the press briefing and appreciated SP Rural Amrit Jain's efforts.
