Aliganj road cave-in affects traffic, repairs likely to stretch a month
LUCKNOW, Aug. 19 -- A cave-in on Aliganj's busy Sector B road will keep the stretch closed for about one month as authorities said repairs to the damaged sewer line are underway, followed by resurfacing by Lucknow Municipal Corporation. The crater, nearly 15 feet wide and 20 feet deep, appeared opposite sweets shop on Wednesday and Thursday nights after heavy rainfall, prompting traffic diversions.
Executive engineer Divyanshu Singh said the cave-in was triggered by leakage in an old sewer pipeline and further weakened by digging for OFC.
"Rainwater entered the trench dug for OFC wiring, creating pressure inside sewer chambers. With leakage in the sewer line, the soil shifted and the road collapsed twice," Singh explained. Singh blamed unregulated cable laying for aggravating the problem.
Officials said restoration will be carried out in two phases. The Jal Nigam will first replace the sewer pipeline, after which the Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) will inspect the site and carry out road resurfacing. The entire process is expected to take about a month. A senior LMC official admitted that frequent cable digging has left several city roads vulnerable.
The damaged stretch lies on Aliganj Road, Sector B, which connects Sitapur Road and Purania on one side and the IT intersection on the other. With the closure expected for 30 days, traffic diversions and congestion in adjoining areas are likely.
Local shopkeepers and residents expressed safety concerns. "This road is a lifeline for office-goers and students heading towards Sitapur Road and IT Crossing. Its sudden closure will create chaos," a shopkeeper said....
