VARANASI, Nov. 23 -- A retired senior citizen was saved from falling prey to digital arrest fraud with the coordination of Cyber Cell, Varanasi Commissionerate and HDFC Bank. An amount of Rs 39 lakh was also saved from being lost, police said on Friday. Assistant commissioner of police, Cyber Cell, Vidush Saxena said that on November 7 a retired senior official (senior citizen) from a central government institution visited an HDFC Bank branch (an all-women-run branch) at Arya Mahila College. He submitted an application form to transfer Rs.39 lakh from his savings account to another bank account. The bank employee noticed that the customer appeared extremely nervous and that this was his first time transferring such a large sum of money. This unusual behavior and the large amount raised concerns. When asked why the money was being transferred, the senior citizen could not provide a satisfactory answer and appeared increasingly distracted, said the officer. Seeing the customer's nervousness, the employee immediately suspected that they had become victims of a cyber fraud. When the senior citizen persisted in sending the money despite repeated persuasion, the bank employee, demonstrating prudence and responsibility, informed the Cyber Cell, added the ACP. Saxena said that upon receiving the information, the Cyber Cell team responded to the scene. Despite attempts to convince the senior citizen and explain the truth, the senior citizen was not ready to say that he was under pressure from fraudsters. The ACP Cyber Crime then spoke with the senior citizen via video call for approximately 45 minutes, then the senior citizen said that he was being threatened by some people. The officer said that the senior citizen was saved from becoming a victim of digital arrest. Deputy commissioner of police, crime, Sarvanathan T, honoured the Cyber Cell team and HDFC personnel who did commendable work by giving them a commendation letter....
