GORAKHPUR, Dec. 19 -- Uttar Pradesh Congress president Ajay Rai on Thursday visited Deoria District Jail to meet former Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Amitabh Thakur, who is currently incarcerated over an old fraud case. Rai alleged that the state government is deliberately targeting Thakur by reopening long-pending legal matters. Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Rai said, "The state government is deliberately targeting Amitabh Thakur with old cases, subjecting him to continuous harassment." He accused the ruling administration of misusing past allegations to intimidate the former officer and asserted that the Congress party would continue to fight against what it called injustice. Rai emphasised that the Congress stands firmly with Thakur and will challenge what it terms as the politically motivated misuse of an old case. After a meeting lasting nearly one and a half hours with the jailed former IPS officer, Rai further alleged that Thakur is facing consequences for actions he took during his service.
