Aishbagh locals blow fuse, stage protest over garbage pile-up
LUCKNOW, Sept. 30 -- Residents of Aishbagh area staged a protest on Monday over the garbage pile up on the roadside, blocking movement and causing inconvenience to commuters. The protest was staged near Ram Nagar (Dhobi Ghat), where waste from several wards had not been removed by the Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC).
Corporator Sandeep Sharma said that the residents alleged that LMC vehicles failed to reach on time, leading to massive accumulation of waste that spilled onto the road. Agitated residents stopped the corporation's heavy earth mover when it arrived to collect the garbage and demanded immediate intervention of senior officials.
Ward corporator Sandeep Sharma, present at the spot, said the entire area's waste has been dumped at this point for the past two years. "The trash compactor machine was never installed here. Waste keeps piling up and even blocks the road, forcing residents to protest," he said.
Sharma added that earlier plans to modernise or shift the dumping station were scrapped after a change in municipal leadership.
The corporator said he tried to contact municipal commissioner Gaurav Kumar and zonal incharge Zone 2 Shilpa Kumari, but neither responded. He then informed mayor Sushma Kharkwal, following which LMC's Environmental Engineer Sanjeev Pradhan reached the spot and assured action.
Residents complained that the constant dumping has created health risks in the locality. The protest was called off after officials assured immediate clearance.
Zone 2 Zonal Incharge Shilpa Kumari said that the issue was resolved and there were plans for the upgradation of the dumping waste centre. She explained that the issue got highlighted after the waste picking vehicles did not reach on time which sparked protests....
