Agra welcomes Sawan with four fairs, devotion and tradition
Agra, July 14 -- The first Monday of Sawan marks the beginning of a month-long celebration in Agra, where four grand fairs are held at four ancient Shiva temples located in the city's four corners. The sequence begins today with a fair at Rajeshwar Temple and continues on consecutive Mondays at Balkeshwar, Kailash, and Prithvinath temples.
Preparations at Rajeshwar temple are in the final stages. Barricades, police deployment, and queue systems are in place to manage the rush of devotees, many of whom arrive early carrying offerings of milk, water, and fruits while chanting 'Bam Bhole'.
Many devotees also visit Bateshwar, a heritage site 70 km from Agra with a cluster of Shiva temples on the Yamuna's bank.
Harihar Puri, priest at Mankameshwar temple, shared, "The sequence begins at Rajeshwar, followed by Balkeshwar, Kailash, and then Prithvinath. If Sawan has five Mondays, Mankameshwar also hosts a fair."
On the third Monday, the fair at Kailash temple draws the biggest crowds and is marked as a local holiday. The ASI also offers free entry to the Sikandra monument that day.
Veteran Agra resident Sunit Sharma recalled, "Earlier, devotees on parikrama crossed our street. The whole city celebrated Sawan."
Unlike Ganga jal-carrying Kanwariyas in other cities, Agra's Sawan sees barefooted devotees offering jalabhishek at temples. The Balkeshwar fair witnesses the highest youth participation, with Kanwariyas arriving in groups after walking through the night....
