AGRA, March 21 -- A court in Agra has sentenced a police sub-inspector to 10 years' imprisonment in a custodial death case from 2018. The court found sub-inspector Anuj Sirohi guilty of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. Additional sessions judge Nitin Kumar Thakur (Court No. 17) awarded the sentence on Thursday. Another accused, Anshul Pratap Singh, was sentenced to seven years' imprisonment in a separate trial. The judge directed that a copy of the order be sent to the Uttar Pradesh Home Department and the Agra Commissioner for action against Rajesh Kumar Pandey, then inspector at Sikandra police station, and circle officer Chaman Singh Chawla for lapses in the investigation. The case relates to the death of Raju Gupta, a resident of Narendra Enclave on Gailana Road. He was taken into custody at Sikandra police station on November 21, 2018, after a complaint by his neighbour. According to the prosecution, Gupta was detained without an FIR and was beaten inside the police station in the presence of his mother, Renu Gupta. His condition worsened the next day, and he was declared dead on arrival at a hospital. The post-mortem report found multiple injury marks, indicating assault during custody.
