After two misses, Ghaziabad's Urva strikes gold & silver
LUCKNOW, May 8 -- Young shooter Urva Chaudhary has around two dozen medals, which includes 13 gold that she won in the last few years. However, she couldn't show her might at the Khelo India Youth Games on the previous two occasions.
In 2023, she ended up at the 13th spot before finishing ninth in 2024.This time, at the 7th edition of the KIYUG, she won two medals-a gold and a silver in the 10m air pistol at the Karni Singh Shooting Range in New Delhi on Wednesday.
"I won gold today because the silver in the team event gave a boost to my confidence. While shooting in the individual event final today, I was focused on my game plan. Nothing less than gold was in my mind," said Urva, who fetched 237.7 points.
Rajasthan's Vidhi Sharma (236.3 pts) and Kanak of Haryana (215.6 pts) finished second and third, respectively. "Even after failing to win a medal in the previous two occasions of the KIYG, I didn't lose my heart and kept working hard," said Urva, who hails from Ghaziabad.
A student of Heritage Academy in Ghaziabad, Urva does her training at a private shooting academy in Modi Nagar as well as the Karni Singh Shooting Range in New Delhi. She had a fifth-place finish at the recent National Games held in Uttarakhand.
"I didn't want to become a shooter at all. It was my parents who motivated me to pursue this sport as my elder sister too was shooting back then. She stopped before the [Covid] lockdown. I, too, was away from the sport for two years before resuming my training in 2022," added Urva, who has also been selected for this year's World Cup.
Besides Urva's gold on Wednesday, judoka Rakshit Sivach also won a silver medal in the 73kg category. Gautam Buddha Nagar's Vedant Chandra also bagged a bronze medal in 50m free style event in swimming....
