Lucknow, Feb. 12 -- The Uttar Pradesh government has made a provision of Rs.22,452 crore for all components of the Jal Jeevan Mission in the state budget. Recently, replying to a question in the Rajya Sabha, Union minister of state for Jal Shakti V Somana had stated that the central government has stopped federal funding for the Jal Jeevan Mission and states have been asked to finish the rest of the work using their own finances. A flagship programme launched in 2019 to connect rural households with tap water, it aimed to link rural households with tap water connections by the end of 2024. Last year, it was extended till December 2028. Uttar Pradesh Jal Shakti minister Swatantra Dev Singh said against the target of providing functional household tap connections to 26.7 million rural households in the state, pure drinking water supply has been ensured in 24.3 million rural households. The provision for various components of the Jal Jeevan Mission in 2026-27 will pave the way for providing tap water to the remaining households soon, he said. A provision of Rs.18,290 crore has been proposed for irrigation and flood control projects in the budget. It will strengthen the state's agricultural system. The completion of long pending projects including Middle Ganga Stage-2, the Kanhar Irrigation Project, the Ken-Betwa Link Project and the Bhoont Dam Project have been accelerated. The projects will create and restore irrigation capacity on approximately 4.49 lakh hectares of agricultural land benefiting millions of farmers, he said. The construction of 2,100 new government tube wells and the reconstruction of 569 defunct government tube wells located in dark zones has restored irrigation capacity on approximately 1.62 lakh hectares of land with benefitting approximately 1.43 lakh farmer families. The completion of 285 flood projects last year provided relief to approximately 49.90 lakh people, and the cleaning of 11,065 kilometres of drains has strengthened the drainage system, Singh said....
