AFI initiates step to identify bogus office-bearers in Uttar Pradesh
LUCKNOW, Jan. 8 -- Office bearers of athletics with no local domicile may lose their hold on the sporting body across the country as the Athletics Federation of India has taken a decision to this effect as it feels that this is resulting in no athletics activities taking place in that district.
In its circular to all the presidents/secretaries, the AFI states that it has been brought to their notice that many principal office-bearers of the districts are not the residents of that particular district.
"AFI is making an endeavour to develop athletics in each and every district of the nation. Electing a person as a principal office bearer who is not a resident of that district impedes the development of athletics in that district. It is therefore important to ensure that only residents of that district can be an office bearer of the said district." AFI's officiating secretary, G Srinibas Patnaik states in the circular.
However, the circular has asked all concerned parties to prove their local domicile by submitting a copy of the Aadhaar card of the president, secretary, and treasurer of the district association to the AFI by the last day of this month.
"If this information is not received within the stipulated timeline, the defaulting district association will stand suspended till the time the final enquiry is conducted by the committee appointed by the president, AFI," the circular further states.
"The committee shall comprise a nominee of AFI, president/secretary of the State Athletics Association, one member (active athlete/official) from the state to be nominated by the president, AFI, in consultation with the State Athletics Association."
The decision, however, is expected to have a big impact on all 70 district units in Uttar Pradesh as many of the district associations are being managed by the people from outside and there are reports of no athletics activities in those districts.
"Yes, many of our district units are being run by the people from other locations and it's really affecting the game in those districts. Athletes are suffering and bound to migrate to other districts for training and events," said an official of the Uttar Pradesh Athletics Association on condition of anonymity.
"From today onwards, we have initiated the process to identify such bogus office-bearers, and we are sure that by the end of this month, such officials will no longer be part of the athletics body as AFI itself has taken a serious note of this," he added.
AFI's other circular, barring office bearers of athletics from joining other sports bodies will also have a serious impact in Uttar Pradesh as many of the office bearers in the state and district associations of athletics are part of the other sporting body such as para athletics.
AFI has clearly said that no office bearer of a state or district athletics association shall hold any office in the state or district association of any other sport. "No office bearer of the federation shall be eligible to be the office bearer simultaneously of any other national sports federation/association, except the IOA or any other multiple discipline Association," AFI circular states.
"All affiliated Member Units are directed to ensure strict compliance with the mentioned provisions. In the event any office bearer is found to hold office in any other sports association, appropriate action shall be initiated against such official," it further states....
