Advocate drowns in Indira canal, body found 35 hrs later
LUCKNOW, May 19 -- The body of high court advocate Anupam Tiwari, 37, was recovered on Sunday from Gosainganj, nearly 35 hours after he went missing in the Indira Dam canal around midnight on Friday. His body was located several kilometres downstream from where he reportedly fell, police said.
Tiwari's relative, Shivam Upadhyay, who had also entered the water to rescue him, was found dead on Saturday, about 200 metres from the spot of the incident.
According to officials, a team from the state disaster response force (SDRF) located Tiwari's body near the Sithauli locality. "The body has been sent for post-mortem examination. Investigations are ongoing," said Chinhat station house officer (SHO) Dinesh Mishra.
The incident was initially reported as a suicide attempt following a domestic dispute. Police said Tiwari had left home after an argument with his wife and allegedly jumped into the canal, prompting Shivam to jump in after him. Both drowned in the strong current.
However, Tiwari's family disputed this version. They maintained that the advocate did not attempt suicide but accidentally slipped into the water while standing on the dam's edge. They said Shivam jumped in only to save him....
