Meerut, Sept. 30 -- The Bareilly district administration and police have intensified their crackdown on individuals accused of inciting unrest in Bareilly, sealing a controversial market linked to Nafees Khan aka Dr Nafees, a close associate of jailed cleric Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan. The market, located at Novelty Square near Pahalwan Sahab's shrine, was sealed by the municipal corporation on Monday, escalating tensions in the city. Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan, leader of the Ittehad-e-Millat Council (IMC), is currently in jail, accused of instigating unrest. Alongside him, his close aides, former IMC spokesperson Nafees and former district president Nadeem Khan, are facing strict action from the authorities. The sealed market, which houses 38 shops and the IMC office on its second floor, has long been mired in controversy due to its construction over a drain, with the matter currently under litigation and a stay order in place. Nafees, considered Maulana Tauqeer's right-hand man, has been accused of managing the market as a self-proclaimed mutawalli (caretaker) of Waqf Board property, collecting rent from tenants. Additionally, he faces allegations of illegally buying and selling Waqf Board properties, including shops near Naumahla Masjid. The sealing of the market follows a viral video in which Nafees is seen threatening a police official. In the video, he warned the Kila Inspector, saying, "I clearly told the Kila Inspector that if you touch the banner, I'll chop off your hands. Your uniforms won't be spared." The threats were made in response to the removal of posters reading "I Love Mohammad." Following the video's circulation, a case was registered against Nafees at the Kila police station. City magistrate Alankar Agnihotri, commenting on the situation, emphasised the administration's resolve to maintain law and order. "The sealing of the 38 shops part of a market complex is a step toward ensuring accountability and upholding the rule of law. Stringent action will be taken against those who threaten public peace," Agnihotri stated....
