VARANASI, Nov. 21 -- Sonbhadra additional district magistrate (judicial) Ramesh Chandra has been nominated to conduct a magisterial inquiry into the November 15 quarry collapse in the Billi Markundi area, in which seven workers were killed. The bodies were recovered after a 72-hour rescue operation. District magistrate Badrinath Singh said Chandra would carry out a factual probe into the causes of the incident and submit an evidence-based report within a fortnight. Singh said the collapse occurred between 3:30 pm and 4:30 pm at the Krishna Mining Works site in the Obra region, where a portion of the mine/rock face gave way, trapping workers. Local and district administration teams, along with NDRF and SDRF personnel, carried out the rescue effort. The mine is operated by partners Madhusudan Singh and Dilip Keshari of M/s Krishna Mining Works, which holds a 10-year mining lease for 8.79 acres in Mauja Billi Markundi.
