Adarsh Singh making waves with sublime willow show
LUCKNOW, Aug. 22 -- While young batter Adarsh Singh enjoys watching every batter in the world in a match, he doesn't follow any as he always believes in himself and wants to set up his own style both in red and white ball cricket.
After making his presence felt with 550 runs in the red-ball Under-25 CK Nayudu Trophy last season for Uttar Pradesh, where every match tested his patience, Kanpur's Adarsh has been making waves with his sublime show with the willow in the ongoing UPTwenty20 League in the state capital. His effortless batting has become the talk of the town.
Despite having a poor start in the new season as he could make just one run in two balls before being bowled by Rinku Singh of Meerut Mavericks in the opening match for last year's runner-up Kanpur Superstars, Adarsh didn't lose his patience and smacked tournament's first century, an unbeaten 100 in just 59 balls with the help of nine boundaries and four sixes against Kashi Rudras.
Adarsh, 20, continued his superb show even in the match against local outfits Lucknow Falcons the other night, stroking 50-ball 81 with the help of 10 boundaries and two sixes. "I am happy to score the first 100 of the event this season, but at the same time I am disappointed too as our side lost both the matches. I could have celebrated my knocks had we won the matches," said Adarsh on Thursday.
The batter, who is his own teacher in sport, said he watches almost all the batters in the world on TV and tries to learn from their styles but doesn't adopt anyone's style in his own batting.
"If you copy, you will lose your own style. So, I keep learning about patience and courage of the batters, but play in my own style. I want everyone to know me by my own style of batting," said Adarsh, who had finished as one of the top run getters for India at the 2024 under-19 ICC World Cup in South Africa.
He also accepted that he believes in staying in the present during the match and playing ball by ball. "I love hitting the ball hard, especially in the white ball cricket, and always go in a match with a solid mental strength. I don't think too much. The less I think the better," he said.
Adarsh, who will once again be the centre of attraction in the game between Kanpur Superstars and Noida Super Kings in a day game on Friday, said he did a lot of homework on the nets before playing his first match in the UPtwenty20 League.
"I just forgot about what I did in the Under-25 matches last season, and just went with the flow of white ball cricket. I struck 100 plus balls in a day at training and now I am getting the benefit of it," said Adarsh, who as an opener for India at the Under-19 World Cup, played a memorable innings of 80 runs against Bangladesh before hitting a fine half-century against New Zealand.
Before bursting on to the Uttar Pradesh's Under-25 set up, he smacked a half-century against Pakistan in under-19 Asia Cup and went on striking 250 runs, including a century and two half centuries, in the triangular series, involving Afghanistan and South Africa.
Son of a farmer, Adarsh, who has been part of the pre-season camps for the upcoming Ranji Trophy season, is quite excited to play for Uttar Pradesh in the premier domestic event Ranji Trophy in the new season.
"Have done well in both the pre-season camps and aim to become the highest run getter in the ongoing UPTwenty20 League as I know that only good performance can give me a chance to play along with seniors in the new season," he said.
"He (Adarsh) has been a natural talent as he enjoys his stay at the wicket with classy hits all around the ground," UP's former Under-19 team captain Ashu Mehrotra said on Thursday.
"In both his innings, including that unbeaten century against MM in the first game, the batter never looked in any discomfort against any bowler and was almost toying with them," said Mehrotra....
