Adarsh hits double ton, UP crush Mumbai in quarterfinals
LUCKNOW, Nov. 26 -- An unbeaten double century by young opener Adarsh Singh helped spirited Uttar Pradesh notch up a facile 77-run win over mighty Mumbai to make it to the semi-finals of the Men's U23 State A Trophy, at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Tuesday.
Kanpur's Singh smacked 138-ball 223 with the help of 14 boundaries and 18 sixes to help Uttar Pradesh post a mammoth 453/5 while batting first after winning the toss. Fellow opener Swastik Chikara and all-rounder Prashant Veer too struck half centuries to boost UP's total.
In reply, Mumbai despite being supported by a century by Ayaz Khan could make 376 with young spinner Prashant Veer bagging four wickets for Uttar Pradesh. Pacer Abdul Rehman, part-timers Sameer Rizvi and Swastik Chikara too claimed two wickets each to help Uttar Pradesh score their first win in the knockouts.
Making a mockery of Mumbai bowling, both Singh and Chikara set the tone for a huge total, stitching together 113 in 16.2 overs for the first wicket. Though Chikara was caught by Pranay Kapadia off Atharva Bhosale after making 58-ball 75 with the help of eight boundaries and five sixes, Singh continued to let his willow do the talking on a placid surface.
The side lost skipper Sameer Rizvi (12) soon, but Singh along with Ali Zafir Mohsin (31, 35b, 1x4, 3x6) continued to keep the scoreboard ticking at a fast pace, stitching together 61 runs for the third wicket. His another 111 runs fifth wicket stand with all-rounder Prashant Veer finally took the score beyond 400 runs. Veer also remained unbeaten on 61, which came off just 22 balls with the help of six boundaries and four sixes.
Chasing a little over nine runs per over wasn't a difficult task for the home side later, but they kept losing wickets on regular intervals before being reduced to 5/148 in 17 overs. Pacer Rehman had both the openers Pranay Kapadia (38) and Aadit Degaonkar (14) before Veer removed captain-keeper Prateek Yadav (44) and Manav Bhatt (5) in quick succession.
Both Ayaz Khan and Himanshu Singh raised some hopes for Mumbai, stitching together 76 runs for the seventh wicket, the target always remained beyond reach of Mumbai batters as Uttar Pradesh bowlers kept them in check. Khan made 104 in 54 balls with the help of eight boundaries and equal number of sixes before being caught by Ritik Vats off Rizvi, Singh scored 75-ball 60 with four boundaries and two sixes.
Left-arm orthodox spinner Prashant Veer finished as wrecker-in-chief, bagging 4/75, Abdul Rehman, Sameer Rizvi and Swastik Chikara shared four wickets between them. The match reminded UP's famous win over Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy in 1998 when Gyanendra Pandey-led side had a thrilling win in the semi-final. On Tuesday too, Pandey was there as the coach of the Under-213 side. "The win today reminded me of our win over Mumbai at the same venue in Ranji Trophy and everyone played his part nicely," said Pandey after the match.
Now on November 29, Uttar Pradesh will play with the winners of the third quarterfinal match between Rajasthan and Maharashtra, scheduled to be played on Wednesday.
After struggling to chase a small total in their match against Karnataka on Monday, Uttar Pradesh batters struggled again and this time their worst show allowed Tamil Nadu to script a facile nine-wicket win in an Elite Group D encounter of the Women's Under-123 T20 Trophy, at the Gurugram Cricket Ground in Haryana on Tuesday.
Uttar Pradesh lost five wickets to chase down Karnataka's 77 runs in their opening match on Monday and the trend continued even on Tuesday when after being invited to bat first, they could score just 100. In reply, Tamil Nadu romped home in 15.1 overs, losing the only wicket of opener NS Subhaharini (18).
Keeper-batter G Kamalini along with C Shushanthika added unbeaten 55 runs for the second wicket. She made 54-ball 64 with the help of five boundaries and two sixes, whereas Shushanthika scored run-a-ball 15 with the help of two boundaries.
Earlier for Uttar Pradesh, Sampada Dixit (21), Sonali Singh (17), Bhumi Singh (14) and Garima Yadav (14*) could cross the double-figure mark. Now in their next league match, Uttar Pradesh meet Tripura on Thursday.
Young spinner Ravi Saini took 3/39 as hosts Uttar Pradesh tightened their noose around visitors Chhattisgarh on the penultimate day of their four-day Elite Group D encounter of the Cooch Behar Trophy, at the Solitaire Cricket Ground in Saharanpur on Tuesday.
After managing 190 runs first innings lead by scoring 370 in reply to Chhattisgarh's first innings total of 180 runs, Uttar Pradesh bowlers did a fine job to claim 4/214, allowing Chhattisgarh to take a slender lead of 24 runs at close of stumps on Tuesday....
