Accused in Rs 4.40-cr heist held by STF
PRAYAGRAJ, July 26 -- The Special Task Force (STF) of Varanasi has arrested a wanted criminal involved in the murder of a truck driver and the theft of copper wires worth Rs 3 crore. The accused, Kartik, was caught in Patiala, Punjab, on Thursday. He had a reward of Rs 1 lakh on his head.
According to police, Kartik and his associates were involved in the murder of Sabarmal, a trailer truck driver from Ajmer, Rajasthan. Sabarmal was transporting copper wires for Indian Railways from Gujarat to Subedarganj Station in Prayagraj. On May 16, his body was found in bushes near Kakodha village under Kokhraj police station limits in Kaushambi district. The trailer, along with the copper wire consignment, was stolen. The total value of the stolen items, including the trailer, was around Rs 4.40 crore.
Following the murder and robbery, a case was registered against unknown persons. During the investigation, police identified several suspects. SP Kaushambi Rajesh Kumar said that one of the accused, Santosh Rajbhar of Porai Khurd (Kheta Sarai police station, Jaunpur), was killed in an encounter, while five of his accomplices have already been nabbed and sent to jail. To catch the remaining suspects, the inspector general (IG) of Prayagraj had recently announced a reward of Rs.1 lakh each for the three men still on the run. Acting on this, the STF intensified their search and managed to trace Kartik to Patiala. STF officers obtained a transit remand from a local court in Punjab and brought Kartik to Kaushambi on Friday.
