Accused couple still on the run, cops change tack, track money trail
Lucknow, Nov. 6 -- Police officials probing the gold heist worth Rs 3 crore at a jewellery showroom here said they were now following a money trail.
Even as the suspects, employee Komal and her husband Ritesh Srivastava, were still avoiding police capture a week after an FIR into the incident was registered, police said the financial trail the duo left behind was now becoming clearer.
Komal had reportedly confessed to the jeweller that she had been stealing gold in small quantities over several months.
The couple allegedly sold 2.5 kg of gold at lower-than-market rates and used the proceeds to buy land, jewellery for themselves, clear a car loan and make other personal investments, as per police.
Deputy commissioner of police (East) Amit Kumar said the couple has been booked for criminal breach of trust and conspiracy.
"They are absconding, but we are tracking their financial transactions and assets created using the stolen gold. Recovery efforts are underway," he said.
Meanwhile, Ritesh has filed a counter-complaint at Mahanagar Kotwali, alleging that his wife was harassed and falsely implicated by the jeweller and showroom manager. This complaint is being probed separately by Nishatganj Police.
Police sources say CCTV footage and stock audits confirm that the theft had been happening systematically from the 'Buy Bank' section of the HSJ Jewellers' showroom.
The crime came to light on October 19, a day before Dhanteras, during routine stock verification when several high-value jewellery pieces were found missing.
Meanwhile, it is said that Komal's husband reportedly visited the store on October 20, apologised and promised to return the gold by October 23. Trusting his assurance, the showroom delayed filing a complaint. When the couple did not return, the jewellers lodged an FIR at Gomti Nagar police station.
Investigators are now scanning property documents, bank statements and digital transactions linked to the couple. Officials suspect that a few others may have helped them dispose of the stolen jewellery....
