9 die in rain-relatedincidents in Delhi,Bengal and Karnataka
New Delhi, May 3 -- At least nine people died in rain-related incidents in Delhi, West Bengal and Karnataka officials in various parts of the country said on Friday following thunderstorms and heavy rain early in the morning which also led to air and road traffic disruptions.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that heavy rainfall was recorded at isolated places over Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, East Rajasthan, Odisha, Jharkhand, Telangana and south interior Karnataka, and attributed the torrential rain in north India to moisture and wind convergence over the region.
"Moisture and wind convergence over the region - fed by both the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal - along with persistently favourable synoptic conditions in the lower and middle tropospheric levels, triggered the heavy rain," IMD said.
In Delhi, a 26-year-old woman and her three children were killed when a tree was uprooted and fell on their house in Najafgarh following strong winds, said officials. The husband sustained minor injuries in his chest and wrist. A 25-year-old construction worker was electrocuted while trying to take cover during the rains.
The heavy rains and strong wind led to disruptions at Delhi airport as over 200 flights were delayed and three other flights were diverted, officials said.
In Bengaluru, a 45-year-old auto-rickshaw driver was killed after a tree fell on the three-wheeler due to rains near a bus stop on Kathriguppe Main Road, officials said. At least three people were killed in separate rain-related incidents in West Bengal since Thursday evening....
