New Delhi, April 7 -- A Madurai court on Monday awarded death sentence to all the nine police personnel convicted in the 2020 Sattankulam custodial deaths case in which a father-son duo, P Jayaraj (58) and J Benicks (31), died in police custody after brutal physical assault. On March 23, the First Additional District and Sessions Court in Madurai had convicted then Sattankulam inspector S. Sridhar; sub-inspectors P. Raghu Ganesh and K. Balakrishnan; head constables S. Murugan and A. Saamidurai; and constables M. Muthuraj, S. Chelladurai, X. Thomas Francis, and S. Veilumuthu. Special sub-inspector Pauldurai was also an accused but he died during trial after contracting Covid-19. Judge G Muthukumaran remarked that the case was a rare one where the police officers, who were obligated to maintain law and order, had themselves acted against the law and brutally assaulted the father and son, who did not have any criminal case against them. The court has also ordered a total compensation of Rs.1.40 crore payable by the officers to the family of the deceased. The judgment comes six years after the incident where Jayaraj and his son Bennix were killed due to custodial violence by the Sathankulam police for allegedly opening their shop beyond 9 pm and violating Covid-19 norms that were in place then....
