LUCKNOW, July 8 -- In a citywide initiative to rehabilitate child beggars, labourers, and underprivileged children, authorities have identified 877 children in various slum settlements of Lucknow for enrollment in schools and linkage to government welfare schemes. A survey conducted in areas such as Rasulpur Sadat, Ramlila Maidan, Takiya, Digdiga, Suggamau, Gandhi Nagar Mati, and Bengali Kheda aims to connect children engaged in begging or labour with education and rehabilitation support. Divisional commissioner Roshan Jacob directed that children living in slums and those involved in street begging be given priority for school admissions under the RTE policy. She said such children should also be brought under the ambit of schemes like the Chief Minister's Bal Seva Yojana and the Bal Shramik Vidya Yojana. Alongside this, poor individuals will be trained and linked with the Village Industry Department's programmes. Officials were instructed to conduct regular camps in slum settlements to identify eligible individuals and extend the benefits of state-run welfare schemes. The municipal corporation, social welfare department, women welfare department, district urban development agency, district supply department, and NGOs have been asked to coordinate efforts to ensure no eligible person is left out.
