82 named in FIRs after Bankeyganj violence over Ambedkar statue
Lakhimpur Kheri, April 16 -- Police have registered two criminal cases at Mailani police station in connection with Tuesday evening's violence in Bankeyganj over the attempted installation of a statue of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar on a disputed land. One FIR was filed by the station in-charge and another by a woman allegedly assaulted during the incident.
Additional superintendent of police Amit Kumar Rai said that a total of 82 named and around 200 unidentified persons have been booked. So far, police have identified and arrested 19 accused, while efforts are underway to apprehend the remaining suspects using video footage, CCTV evidence and field intelligence. The violence erupted when a group attempted to install the statue on a land claimed by Chanda Devi, who alleged that she and her niece were manhandled when they objected. The mob later resorted to stone-pelting and arson, damaging government vehicles. Heavy police deployment restored order, and normalcy is gradually returning to the town. htc...
