80% cancer patients use tobacco: KSSSCI director
LUCKNOW, June 2 -- The Kalyan Singh Super Specialist Cancer Institute & Hospital (KSSSCI) is set to launch a Tobacco Cessation Clinic (TCC), a dedicated center to help individuals overcome nicotine addiction. Professor Madan Lal Brahma Bhatt, institute director announced this Institute, during a public health programme organised by the department of radiation oncology and public health on Sunday.
Professor Bhatt raised an alarm about the devastating impact of tobacco, stating, "Eighty percent of our cancer patients are tobacco users - this is not a coincidence, it is a crisis." He strongly criticised the tobacco and nicotine industries for its aggressive and misleading marketing adding, "These industries are not just promoting addiction - they're promoting death, cleverly masked by flashy advertisements aimed at children and youth."
Dr Ayush Lohia of the public health department shared that one in four Indians uses some form of tobacco, with rural areas showing even higher usage rates than urban regions. He cautioned, "Smokeless forms like gutkha, khaini, paan, supari, and even katha are equally harmful, playing a major role in causing oral cancers, gum disease, and palate cancer."
Dr Pramod Kumar Gupta from the radiation oncology department, who co-organised the event with Dr Lohia, echoed these concerns.
