LUCKNOW, Nov. 6 -- Players from 45 districts of Uttar Pradesh will not only compete for 94 gold medals in the 41st Sub-Junior, 9th Cadet, and 42nd Senior Taekwondo Championships, but will also face the challenge of securing a place in the Uttar Pradesh team when the three-day event begins on Thursday, at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Multipurpose Hall in KD Singh 'Babu' Stadium here. As per the organizers, more than 800 players from 45 districts, including host Lucknow, will participate in the championship in which players from various age groups will compete in Kyorugi (fighting) and Poomsae (forms) events for 94 gold, 94 silver, and 188 bronze medals. The gold medal winners of the championship will represent Uttar Pradesh in the upcoming National Sub-Junior Taekwondo Championship, National Senior Taekwondo Championship, and the upcoming National Cadet Taekwondo Championship. On the eve of the championship, in the freshers Group competitions, Yashkant of Hardoi, Navraj Singh of Lakhimpur, and Shivam Singh of Lucknow won gold medals. Sandeep Dwivedi of Unnao, Aarav Sahu of Lucknow, and Aarav Das of Bareilly won silver medals, while Karan Sharma and Akshat Pratap of Unnao and Mohammad Arsh of Lucknow won bronze medals. Vijay Mitra Dwivedi XI defeated Bula Ganguli XI in the opening match of the 2nd Vijay Mitra Dwivedi Memorial Sub-Junior Hockey Tournament, at the CB Gupta Ground here on Wednesday. Ayan Dhanuk put the winners head in the 14th minute, but soon Roshni Verma restored parity for Bula Ganguli XI. But thereafter, Subhash scored back-to-back goals to ensure the teams' victory.
