8-yr-old dies after falling into open drain
GORAKHPUR, Aug. 12 -- An 8-year-old girl died after allegedly falling into an open drain in Ghosi Pur locality under Tiwari Pur police station limits on Monday evening, triggering public outrage over alleged negligence by the Gorakhpur Municipal Corporation (GMC).
Residents staged a protest, seeking compensation for the family and strict action against the contractor.
Officials said the victim, Afreen, 8, daughter of Anees of Lala Toli, was returning home after learning Arabic at Tile Wali Masjid.
Following heavy rain, she slipped into the drain and was swept nearly 50 metres by a strong current. Locals tried to rescue her and took her to a private hospital before shifting her to the district hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
Residents alleged that the drain had been under construction by the GMC for a long time, but the contractor was working carelessly, ignoring safety standards. They said no barricades or warning signs were placed, and work had been progressing slowly for months.
Locals maintained that safety measures could have prevented the tragedy and pointed to similar lapses at other construction sites in the city. They now await action against those allegedly responsible....
