Kanpur, Sept. 28 -- Police detained seven suspected Bangladeshi nationals from the Sheikhpura locality in Kannauj on Saturday. The operation was part of a continuing crackdown on illegal immigration and followed the detention of 40 suspected Bangladeshi nationals in Kannauj and Kanpur by Delhi Police's crime branch on September 23. According to officials, the police conducted an early morning raid in Sheikhpura, where the seven individuals were picked up on suspicion of being undocumented immigrants. These individuals had reportedly been living in the area for over 15 years in makeshift shelters. The seven detainees were taken into custody. Their long-term presence in the locality had previously gone unnoticed. The individuals from the area were brought to the local police station for questioning. Their identity and residency documents are now under scrutiny. SP Kannauj Vinod Kukar said, "The identity of these individuals is currently under verification. Only after detailed examination can it be confirmed if they are Bangladeshi nationals." The operation is believed to have been prompted by inputs received during the questioning of two other suspected Bangladeshis detained in Delhi's Kashmiri Gate area earlier this month. During interrogation, they disclosed that several acquaintances were residing in UP, specifically naming Kannauj.
