PRAYAGRAJ, Nov. 30 -- The count of inactive accounts in the post offices of the Prayagraj region is rapidly increasing. Due to lack of transactions in the last 7 to 10 years, over 7 lakh accounts have turned inactive in the Prayagraj region comprising four divisions of the state including Prayagraj, Sultanpur, Pratapagrah and Mirzapur. In the Prayagraj division alone, over 1.29 lakh accounts have remained inactive for the past several years. These accounts with funds in it totaling to around Rs 5.94 crore, have been lying in post offices without any usage for several years. This situation exists despite post offices offering greater rates of interest of 4% as compared to 2 to 3% at banks. India Post officials revealed that to avail of any benefits of the government scheme, it is mandatory to open a savings account. Therefore, people open accounts to avail scheme benefits, but after receiving the benefits, they stop transactions. According to the official, if an account does not witness any transaction continuously for three years, it automatically becomes inactive. In such a case, the account owner has to come to the post office and complete their KYC. According to deputy superintendent of posts, Prayagraj division, SK Tiwari, there were several accounts which were two to three decades old and had not witnessed any transaction. He said that the department periodically checks the address on the account and sends letters to their homes, urging them to come and complete their KYC. The department had also conducted three or four KYC camps. Many account holders are migrant laborers who shift to other locations, while some accounts are frozen due to lack of updates after the death of family members. As per records, the Georgetown, Civil Lines, and Kydganj post offices in Prayagraj city itself have the highest number of inactive accounts. A similar situation exists in rural areas, with a large number of inactive accounts in Saraimamrej, Phulpur, and Holagarh blocks of the district. Records revealed that a significant 1,29,518 inactive accounts existed in Prayagraj Division followed by 1,73,667 such accounts in Sultanpur Division, 1,73,553 such accounts in Pratapgarh Division and 1,16,837 accounts in Mirzapur Division, respectively....
