7 highways closed as rainfall triggers landslides: Officials
Mussoorie, Aug. 19 -- Rainfall across Uttarakhand has triggered landslides, paralysing road connectivity in several districts and disrupting the Char Dham Yatra. At least 279 roads, including seven national highways, have been closed, officials said on Monday.
According to the state disaster management department, the Kedarnath highway was blocked on Monday morning following a landslide at the Sirobagad zone in Rudraprayag district. The Badrinath highway was also shut due to falling of bouldersnear Bhanerpani in Chamoli, where road-clearing work was hampered by continuous debris. The Gauchar-Kameda road, which had also been blocked, was reopened by evening after heavy machines were deployed.
In Uttarkashi, the Gangotri highway remained closed beyond Dabrani for the past 13 days due to massive landslides following the Dharali disaster of August 5. On Sunday, fresh slides blocked stretches near Nalupani and Netala, with debris forcing commuters to abandon vehicles.
District disaster management officer Shardul Gusain said stranded travellers were guided on foot to safer areas by police and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF).
According to district officials, landslides in Pauri district disrupted the Badrinath highway near Farasu, close to the Hanuman temple, where a 50-metre stretch has been caving in towards the Alaknanda river. The collapse has narrowed the carriageway, causing long traffic snarls. District magistrate Swati S Bhadauria inspected the site and instructed officials to prepare a detailed report for the state government. She also asked the Tehri Hydro Development Corporation (THDC) to assess erosion-prevention measures.
Traffic was similarly hit in Tehri district, where the Rishikesh-Srinagar road was blocked at Mulyagaon before being cleared after a two-hour operation. The route at Kuner, however, remained closed till late evening. Officials said machinery had been deployed and the road would likely reopen within hours....
