600 ASHAs empowered at SGPGI workshop
Lucknow, Aug. 29 -- In an effort to tackle the growing concern of stillbirths, the Stillbirth Society of India (SABSIKAN-2025) held a special workshop titled "Every Pregnancy Safe, Every Birth Safe" at the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) on Thursday. Over 600 Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) participated in the training programme, which focused on preventing stillbirths and promoting healthier pregnancies.
The workshop highlighted the importance of key health indicators such as blood pressure, fetal movement, and weight gain-factors that significantly impact pregnancy outcomes. Experts including Prof Mandakini Pradhan, Dr Asna Ashraf, Dr Naini Tandon and Dr Tamreen Khan stressed that continuous monitoring of these indicators throughout pregnancy is crucial for early identification of potential risks. Special emphasis was placed on monitoring fetal movement, as a decrease can signal potential complications.
ASHA workers were encouraged to regularly check pregnant women's blood pressure, monitor fetal movement, and track weight changes, as abnormalities in these areas may indicate health risks.
Prof Indu Lata from SGPGI's obstetrics and gynecology department also addressed the rising incidence of gestational diabetes, which has surged from 10% to 30% in recent years. She underscored the importance of regular blood sugar monitoring during pregnancy.
Deputy chief minister Brajesh Pathak presented awards to 10 ASHA workers for their exemplary service. Honorees such as Deepa Sharma, Kanchan Devi, and Anju Shukla were commended for their dedication and efforts in improving health outcomes in rural areas.
