PRAYAGRAJ, March 9 -- Six-year-old Pratik Sharma, who was kidnapped from Saraikala village in Manda tehsil of Prayagraj on Saturday, was recovered in Varanasi nearly 24 hours later. However, the two men who allegedly kidnapped him fled before police reached the spot, officials said on Sunday. According to police, the kidnappers left the child near a lawn in Ramnagar, Varanasi, after writing his mother's mobile number on a slip of paper and placing it in his hand. Preliminary probe suggests that the kidnapping was carried out by two youths who are Pratik's maternal uncles, officials said, adding that police are now questioning the child's mother, Aarti Devi, and other family members to ascertain the motive. The child was kidnapped around 3:30pm on Saturday in Saraikala village under the Dighiya outpost area of Manda police station while returning from school and walking home with his grandfather, Nageshwar Sharma. The accused arrived in a car about 30 metres from their house, forcibly took the boy and sped off, police said. Aarti Devi lodged a complaint late Saturday night, following which a case was registered at Manda police station. Senior police officials also visited the family the same night given the seriousness of the case. On Sunday, police intensified their efforts by tracing the registration number of the car in question. Later in the evening, a security guard at a lawn in Ramnagar noticed the child and dialled the number written on the slip found in his hand. After receiving the information, station house officer Anil Verma and his team left for Varanasi and recovered the child. During initial questioning, Pratik told police that his maternal uncles had forcibly taken him in their car and later abandoned him near the lawn after writing his mother's phone number. Sources confirmed that one of the suspects is from Varanasi and the other from the Meja area of Prayagraj. While investigators believe the boy was abducted by his maternal relatives, the motive remains unclear. The family has not given any explanation either.
