6,600 displaced; 3,752 in relief camps in Vns
Varanasi, Aug. 6 -- Floods in the Ganga have displaced at least 6,631 people from 1,443 families in Varanasi district, as per official figures.
Among them, 3,752 people from 796 families were relocated to flood relief camps. Out of the 46 relief camps set up here, 20 are in Tehsil Sadar. A total of 53 villages and 24 localities in the city have been affected.
According to the Central Water Commission, the Ganga's water level increased to 72.23 metre on Tuesday. With the situation turning grim, as many as 80 boats have been pressed into action to help the people in flood-affected areas. Five NDRF teams were also assisting in the relief works.
Ministers Suresh Khanna and AK Sharma, divisional commissioner S. Rajalingam and district magistrate Satyendra Kumar inspected the flood-hit areas of the district on Tuesday.
Also, about 1,898 hectares of crops of 7,037 farmers in the district have suffered damage, which was being assessed.
