Dehradun, Dec. 23 -- A 55-year-old man was killed after a vehicle plunged into a 300-metre deep gorge in the Mirchora area of Pauri Garhwal district late on Sunday night, officials said on Monday. According to the state disaster response force (SDRF), the district control room (DCR), Pauri Garhwal, received information around midnight on Sunday night that a vehicle had fallen into a gorge at Mirchora. Following the alert, an SDRF team from the Satpuli post, led by head constable Mahavir Rawat, was immediately dispatched to the accident site. Officials said the vehicle, bearing registration number UK12 CB 0607, had skidded off the road and fallen into a gorge nearly 300 metres deep. One person was reported to be trapped inside the vehicle. Officials said despite the difficult terrain and darkness, the SDRF team carried out a swift and coordinated rescue operation. Personnel descended into the steep gorge using safety equipment and managed to locate the vehicle and retrieve the body of the occupant. The body was recovered from the gorge and brought up to the main road after considerable effort, an SDRF official said, adding that the deceased was later handed over to the district police for further legal formalities. The deceased was identified as Sardar Singh (55), a resident of Village Margao in Pauri Garhwal district.
