5-year-old tiger moved to Rajaji Reserve from CTR
Haldwani/Dehradun, May 2 -- The five-year-old male tiger from Corbett Tiger Reserve (CTR) that was tranquilised on Tuesday has been translocated to Rajaji Tiger Reserve, where it was soft released on Thursday, said forest officials. Coco Rose, director Rajaji Tiger Reserve (RTR) said under the Tiger Translocation Project, so far one male tiger and three female tigresses have been successfully translocated from CTR to Rajaji Tiger Reserve.
"The objective of this project is to increase the number of tigers in the western part of Rajaji Tiger Reserve. The male tiger was transported safely from Bijrani Range of Corbett Tiger Reserve to Motichur Range of Rajaji Tiger Reserve where it was soft released (releasing in a tiger enclosure, where it will be kept for some time ) on Thursday. A radio collar has been fitted for monitoring the tiger. The tiger will be kept under observation for a few days. After that, it will be released in the open forest (hard release). A special tiger monitoring team has been formed for 24x7 monitoring of the tiger. Apart from this, camera traps have been installed in all areas for monitoring", said Rose.
Saket Badola, director CTR said that the male tiger was tranquilised by a team of forest officials on Tuesday evening. "The tiger was brought to Dhela animal rescue centre, where veterinarians examined its health. After that, it was transported to Rajaji Tiger Reserve on Wednesday evening and it reached RTR on Thursday morning"
Uttarakhand has third highest tiger population in the country with 560 tigers, with CTR reporting the highest tiger population with 260 tiger among the country's 53 tiger reserves, according to the last tiger census....
