5-year-old tiger from Corbett released in Rajaji forest area
Dehradun, May 6 -- A five-year-old male tiger translocated from Corbett Tiger Reserve (CTR) was released into forest area of Rajaji Tiger Reserve on Monday under the Tiger Translocation Project to increase the number of tigers in the western part of the Rajaji Tiger Reserve, a forest official said.
"The fifth tiger to be translocated under the project was tranquilised in the Bijrani Range on April 30. After the health check up of the male tiger and fitting a radio collar around its neck by the veterinary officers of CTR, the big cat was brought to the Motichur Range of Rajaji Tiger Reserve where it was soft released (in an enclosure) on May 1. The tiger today (on Monday) was released in the wild (hard release) in presence of the state forest minister Subodh Uniyal at around 2.30 pm," Coco Rose, director Rajaji Tiger Reserve (RTR) said.
Rose further said that a special tiger monitoring team has been formed and camera traps have been installed in all areas for 24x7 monitoring of the tiger.
Uttarakhand has third highest tiger population in the country with 560 tigers, with Corbett Tiger Reserve reporting the highest tiger population with 260 tigers among the country's 53 tiger reserves, according to the last tiger census.
According to the tiger census report, there are 260 tigers inside CTR and 229 outside Corbett Tiger Reserve. In contrast, there 51 tigers in Rajaji Tiger Reserve.
The Centre had approved the Uttarakhand Tiger Relocation Project in 2016 and later a team of the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) visited CTR and RTR and gave the nod to the project, said officials.
The first tiger was translocated in December 2020 followed by a tigress in January 2021 ....
