Dehradun/Mussoorie/Rudrapur, June 21 -- Four members of a family, including a 10-month-old infant, were killed after the wall of their house in Uttarkashi collapsed on Thursday evening, while a A 55-year-old trader of Tanakpur lost his life at Batnagarh on Purnagiri temple road in Champawat the morning on Friday after he slipped over debris accumulated due to a landslide, officials said, as heavy rains continued to lash the state. The deceased family members were identified as Gulam Hussain (26), his wife Rukma Khatoon (23), and their children Aabid (3) and Salma (10 months), while the trader was idenitied as Chandrapal. Upon receiving the information of the wall collapse, teams from revenue department, state disaster response force (SDRF) and police reached the spot and recovered their bodies. SDRF Commandant Arpan Yaduvanshi said: "We received information from the Mori police station today about a house collapse incident in village Mora, in which some people were reportedly buried under the debris. Upon receiving the alert, our team, led by Sub-Inspector Deepak Kuniyal from our Mori post, rushed to the spot. "Village Mora is located along a footpath approximately one kilometre uphill from the main road. Our team reached the site and immediately launched a search operation," he said. Yaduvanshi added, "At the scene, it was found that the incident had occurred during the night. Four members of the same family, who were inside the house at the time, died after being buried under the debris following the collapse of a wall. All the bodies were recovered. We completed the search operation and coordinated with the local administration to assist in further necessary procedures." He added that the reason for the collapse is yet to be ascertained. Meanwhile, the body of Chandrapal was handed over to his relatives after post-mortem. The administration has provided Rs.4 lakh as ex-gratia to the deceased's family, said officials. Akash Joshi, Mela magistrate and sub divisional magistrate, Tanakpur said, "The incident took place in the morning our teams tried to rescue the trader but he had died on the spot. We have provided Rs.4-lakh as ex-gratia to his family as per norms." Batnagarh is a rainy nullah on famous Purnagiri temple road around 12 km from Tanakpur. Batnagarh witnessed a heavy landslide on Wednesday. and its debris accumulated on the way causing road blockade. Around 5000 pilgrims were stuck due to the debris. Police and SDRF launched a rescue operation and helped pilgrims in crossing the Batnagarh. "Due to debris and risky traffic we have banned pilgrimage and advised pilgrims to postpone the pilgrimage but they are not mending their ways. On Friday, the trader was on way to Tanakpur despite the administration's advice and faced a fatal incident." Said Joshi. The deceased was identified as Chandrapal, a resident of Sharda colony in Tanakpur. He had been running a small shop in Purnagiri fair area. Joshi said, "Road and electricity supply suffered a heavy loss as road and electricity poles have washed away due to debris of the landslide. We are trying to restore the electricity supply but unfavourable weather is creating obstacles." The Southwest Monsoon reached Uttarakhand on Friday, covering most districts across the state, with only Haridwar district expected to be covered in the next one to two days, according to India Meteorological Department (IMD) officials. Bikram Singh, Director, IMD Dehradun centre said, "The monsoon has reached Uttarakhand and advanced in most parts with forecast of isolated heavy rainfall across the state in the coming four to five days." Residents and authorities are advised to remain vigilant as the state is bracing for a spell of intense weather, said Bikram Singh.
