5 injured amid tensions on 'conversion' charges
Haldwani, April 21 -- Tension prevailed in Nanakmatta town of Udham Singh Nagar district after a clash broke out during a prayer gathering over allegations of religious conversion, police said, adding five people were injured after stones were allegedly pelted during the confrontation.
According to police, a "healing prayer meeting" organised by members of the Christian community was underway in Navinagar village on Sunday when members of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal reached the spot alleging that religious conversions were being carried out under the guise of the event. The allegations led to a heated argument between the two groups.
Amid the confrontation, stones were thrown allegedly from the roof of the place, triggering a scuffle between the two sides. Several villagers sustained injuries in the incident. The injured were identified as Priyanshu Rana, Renuvati Devi, Sunita Devi, Sarjuvati and Kishan Singh. They were sent to a nearby hospital for medical examination, police said.
Ajay Bhagat, president of the VHP local unit, and Puran Joshi, provincial convener of Bajrang Dal, alleged that villagers were being lured into religious conversion through monetary incentives and other inducements. "We have demanded a high-level inquiry into the matter," they said. However, Sushil Masih Gill denied the allegations and said the gathering was a routine worship programme conducted in accordance with constitutional rights. "The claims of conversion are baseless," he said. Circle officer, Bhupendra Singh Dhoni, said complaints have been received from both sides. htc...
