Agra, Jan. 23 -- Five, including a woman, were arrested by the Mathura Cyber Police on Thursday, for allegedly placing a woman under "digital arrest" and duping her of Rs 2.04 crore. The accused had posed as CBI officials and blamed the woman for her involvement in a supposed fraud. A case was registered at the cyber police station. The son of the woman, Arun Gigras, resides in the USA. Gigras, 75, lodged a complaint at the Mathura cyber police station on December 23 in which she said that she had received a call from an unknown number. The caller claimed to be an official from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and another, who claimed to be from the crime branch of police. They accused her of money laundering through misuse of her Aadhaar card and SIM of mobile, the media cell of the Mathura police said. The accused created a wave of panic and fear for Girgas and served her with "notices" seeking investigation of her bank accounts. On details provided by the frightened woman, the fraudsters transferred an amount of Rs two crore and four lakh. Later, coming to know about fraud, the victim Girgas lodged an FIR and case no 39 of 2025 was registered under section 318(4) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and 66D of the Information Technology Act against unidentified accused. Inspector Mohit Tomar was asked to investigate the matter and this led to arrest of the accused on Thursday. Avinash Kumar Singh, superintendent of police (crime), while addressing the media on Thursday stated that police investigation brought certain names to the fore and they were arrested from Bareilly Highway. Those arrested include Ramesh alias Ram, 22, from Falodi in Rajasthan, Rahul Maglani, 26, from Agra, Lakshya Agarwal, 20, from Agra, Puneet Solanki, 29, from Kirawali in Agra. The woman arrested had links with the gang and the money was siphoned through her account. Police recovered nine mobile phones, nine SIM cards, PAN cards and Aadhaar cards.
