New Delhi, May 24 -- The Union ministry of housing and urban affairs (MoHUA) announced 4% reservation for persons with disabilities in the allotment of government housing under the general pool residential accommodation (GPRA) category on Thursday. A statement released by MoHUA said that an office memorandum by the Directorate of Estates has been issued in alignment with the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPwD) Act after the "landmark" decision taken by Union minister Manohar Lal Khattar, who heads MoHUA. "This initiative reflects the government's dedication to empowerment and strengthens the foundation of an inclusive India," the statement said. In the past, disability rights activists questioned MoHUA for not following due process in retrofitting old government buildings as part of the government's Accessible India Campaign in 2015.
