47 vulnerable villages identified in Prayagraj
Prayagraj, July 3 -- As water levels in the Ganga and Yamuna rivers continue to rise, the Prayagraj district administration has heightened its preparedness for potential flooding. A total of 47 villages identified as highly vulnerable to flood-related disruptions have been placed on high alert. Administrative teams in these areas have been instructed to remain vigilant and ready for immediate response, officials said.
To facilitate swift rescue and relief operations if needed, teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been put on standby across the district. Mock drills are also being conducted to assess and enhance the preparedness of all personnel involved, officials added.
"Preparations for flood management have been completed. We have identified 47 vulnerable villages that are most affected by flooding during the monsoon, and special arrangements have been made for them. The Irrigation Department's control room is fully operational. Preparations are also in place to open any of the 88 flood check-posts at a moment's notice," said district magistrate Ravindra Kumar Mandar.
Fluctuating river levels have raised concern. Just two days ago, the water level surged by up to three meters in a single day. In response, the irrigation department is closely monitoring daily water releases from dams between Uttarakhand and Prayagraj. This monitoring aims to predict water arrival times and volumes across different regions. Data is also being collected from Mirzapur and Varanasi to estimate how long elevated water levels will persist.
District magistrate Mandar has directed all sub-divisional magistrates (SDMs) and Tehsildars to conduct regular inspections in their areas. ADM (finance and revenue) Vinita Singh reported that current water levels stand at 76.80 meters at the Ganga's Phaphamau gauge and 75.58 meters at the Yamuna's Naini gauge. The danger level for both rivers is 84.734 meters. With ongoing rainfall in upstream areas, further increases in water levels are anticipated. All SDMs and Tehsildars have been instructed to remain on high alert. Preparations are underway at all 88 flood check-posts to ensure district-wide readiness for emergencies.
To prevent urban waterlogging, the Prayagraj municipal commissioner has overseen the cleaning of 106 drains within city limits. In flood-prone villages where road access may be disrupted, additional boats-including larger vessels-have been stationed to ensure connectivity is maintained....
