Dehradun, Feb. 3 -- A 40-year-old man was arrested for allegedly murdering a 32-year-old woman in Shivaji Nagar area of Rishikesh on Saturday, police said on Monday. Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Dehradun Ajai Singh said the woman identified as Preeti, worked as an assistant at AIIMS Rishikesh, was shot dead by the man in her rented accommodation at Shivaji Nagar on the night of January 31. He added that the accused Suresh Gupta, a resident of Dargahpur village, in Haridwar, was arrested from Uttar Pradesh's Saharanpur district on Monday. The accused was currently residing at Awas Vikas Colony under Rishikesh police station in Dehradun district. "Acting on technical inputs and intelligence, the accused was traced and arrested from Chhutmalpur, Saharanpur," the SSP said. After the incident on Saturday, a complaint was lodged by the victim's father, Bachchan Singh Rawat at the Rishikesh police station. Based on the complaint, police registered a case under Section 103(1) of the BNS. He said preliminary investigation revealed that Preeti Rawat had divorced her husband a few years ago. According to police, the woman started working at a shop in Rishikesh that belonged to the in-laws of the accused, Suresh Gupta. That is where the two met, police said. Over time, their acquaintance allegedly developed into a relationship that led to a dispute between Gupta and his wife. Eventually, Gupta divorced his wife around four months ago, allegedly to marry Preeti. Police said that Gupta subsequently sold his ancestral property in Laksar, Haridwar, for about Rs.35 lakh and began searching for a house in Rishikesh....
