VARANASI, Nov. 4 -- At least 40 people submitted property documents related to their buildings which have been identified for Dal Mandi lane widening project in Varanasi, said executive engineer public works department (PWD) KK Singh and added that they submitted the documents in a PWD camp set up at Chowk police station premises on Monday. Singh said that it is expected that some more people may submit the documents. In the meantime, the Varanasi Development Authority (VDA) conducted a survey and found that basements of several buildings were being used commercially in the electronics and wholesale market and flouting safety standards. VDA has started action against such buildings. VDA secretary Ved Prakash Mishra said that a survey was also underway in Dal Mandi, and basements were being inspected regularly. Commercial use of basements is not permitted, and action will be taken against those violating norms, including any illegal structures. As per the plan under the project, 650-metre-long Dal Mandi Road will be widened to 17.5 metres at a cost of approximately Rs 221crore. This includes Rs 23.99crore for civil work , Rs 194 crore for compensation, and Rs 3crore for utility shifting . Total 187 buildings have been identified for acquisition.
