4 held, including one in encounter, after youth killed in Gkp village
GORAKHPUR, Sept. 18 -- After a 19-year-old NEET aspirant was killed allegedly by cattle smugglers during a clash with villagers in Gorakhpur late Monday night, police arrested an accused following a brief encounter under Ahirauli police station limits in Kushinagar on Wednesday morning, officials said. The operation was conducted by a police team from Gorakhpur and Kushinagar.
Police said the accused, identified as Raheem, sustained a bullet injury to his leg and was hospitalised.
Senior superintendent of police (SSP), Gorakhpur, Raj Karan Nayar confirmed that two other suspects, Chhotu and Raju, were held in the early hours and they were currently in custody, while rewards had been announced for the capture of two more.
Another accused, Ajab Hussain, caught by locals after the incident was undergoing treatment at the BRD Medical College, he added.
Reports said Deepak Gupta, 19, was killed late Monday night after confronting cattle smugglers near Jungle Chhatra Dhari village under Pipraich police station limits. His death sparked large-scale violence during which police personnel were pelted with stones and cattle smugglers' pickup van was set afire, while the Gorakhpur-Pipraich road remained blocked for five hours.
As tension continues to prevail in Mahua Chapi Tola area of Jungle Chhatra Dhari village, senior police officials, including SP (north) Jitendra Kumar and the circle officer, were monitoring the situation. ADG (law and order) Amitabh Yash inspected the site and held two high-level meetings with police officers in order to devise a strategy to check cattle smuggling.
Meanwhile, SSP Nayar suspended six police personnel posted at the Jungle Dhushan police outpost, including three inspectors, for dereliction of duty. A departmental inquiry has been initiated against them, officials said. Police have cordoned off the affected area and joint teams from Pipraich and Kushinagar have been deployed to prevent further unrest....
