Silchar, March 23 -- A police commando camp in Assam's Tinsukia district came under a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) attack in the wee hours of Sunday, leaving at least four personnel injured, officials aware of the matter said. The banned militant outfit United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) later claimed responsibility for the attack. Chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said counter operations have been launched to nab those behind the attack. ULFA(I), in a statement, claimed responsibility for the attack in Jagun area and said 'Operation Bujoni' was carried out in retaliation against Assam Police's repeated action against the banned outfit, and alleged drone attacks by the Army on its camps last year. The attack comes ahead of the state assembly elections, scheduled on April 9. Confirming the attack, Sarma said, "An incident has happened, and it is highly condemnable. Counter operations have been launched by Assam Police and the Army, and we are confident those responsible will be nabbed." The chief minister refused to comment on the ULFA(I), claiming that the attack was carried out by it. The injured personnel were taken to Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh for treatment and security measures were heightened across Upper Assam, officials said. The attack occurred around 2 am at the Jagun outpost near the 10th Mile area under Lekhapani police station, a sensitive belt close to the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border, said officials adding that multiple explosions were heard over nearly 20 minutes. "At 2.01 am we heard the first blast, followed by several more, suspected to be mortars," an official present at the camp said. Police said at least five RPG shells were fired, four of which exploded inside the area. The blasts were followed by intermittent gunfire. Senior officers, led by Tinsukia SSP Mayank Kumar Jha, rushed to the spot. HT tried to contact Jha, but he did not respond to calls....
