India, Feb. 3 -- KANPUR A man who had been absconding for 35 years in connection with a 1984 murder case was arrested on Monday from Chakeri area of Kanpur when he arrived there to visit a relative, police said. The accused has been identified as Shaukat. According to police, Shaukat was involved in the killing of a youth, Sultan Qadir, in Colonelganj during a rivalry between two local wrestling groups in 1984. He was arrested soon after the incident and lodged in Gonda jail, but went missing after being released on bail in 1990 and remained absconding for over three decades. Police said Shaukat had been living in Gonda under an assumed identity and earning his livelihood by running a vegetable cart. As part of a renewed drive to trace long-absconding accused, police commissioner Raghubir Lal announced a reward of Rs.50,000 for his arrest on January 20 this year. Two teams were formed to track his movements, and mobile numbers linked to his family members were placed under surveillance. Deputy commissioner of police (Central) Atul Srivastava said the accused was arrested from Koyla Nagar in Chakeri based on technical and field intelligence. "Now around 70-years-old, he managed to evade arrest for decades by frequently changing his location and identity," he said.
