328 firearms, 10,600 rounds of ammo seized in Manipur
Imphal, June 15 -- In counter-insurgency operations in the outskirts of five valley districts of Manipur, joint teams of Manipur Police, Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), Army, and Assam Rifles, seized 328 firearms and over 10,600 rounds of ammunition on the intervening night Friday and Saturday, officials aware of the matter said, adding that this is the largest single recovery of weapons since the outbreak of violence in the state in May 2023.
According to Manipur Police, the operations were carried out based on intelligence inputs suggesting presence of hidden weapons in valley districts including Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishnupur, Thoubal, and Kakching. A total of 328 firearms - including 151 self-loading rifles (SLRs), 65 INSAS rifles, 73 assorted rifles, 12 might machine guns (LMGs), 6 AK-series rifles, 5 carbine guns, 2 MP5 guns, 2 Amogh rifles, one AR-15 rifle, six pistols, two flare guns, one mortar, and two barrels - were recovered, the statement said.
In addition, the joint teams seized over 10,600 rounds of ammunition including 3,534 SLR rounds, 2,186 INSAS rounds, 2,252 .303 rounds, 407 Amogh rounds, 234 AK rounds, and 20 rounds of 9mm ammunition. The operation also led to the recovery of 591 assorted magazines, 10 hand grenades, three lathodes, seven detonators, and three para rounds.
A senior police officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, "This is the largest single recovery of weapons since the outbreak of violence on May 3, 2023, when around 6,000 firearms were looted from police armouries.
As of last week, approximately 5,270 weapons and 60,000 rounds of ammunition had been recovered, and with this latest seizure, the total has now crossed 5,500."...
